They mean it's time to take the nice people at your friendly local VW shop some more money. Seriously. My wife's 2000 Passat's dashboard is lit up like a Christmas tree with warning lights - check engine - abs brake failure - STOP! - etc... We have taken it to the shop and everytime they say nothing is wrong - the car is fine....that will be $110.00 please. Her last "scheduled maintenance" cost over a thousand dollars - and it STILL had a "check engine" light on when she left. now, we can't pass an inspection because of the warning lights. I'm ready for another car. Sad, though because as a car it is really great - lots of power and great handling with a solid feel - not tinny.
Check the user manual it has illustration for all warning lights

The warning light symbols on a 1999 VW Passat could mean the car needs an oil change or that the gas cap is not tightly on. The warning lights can also malfunction and turn on due to a bad sensor.

It is not a warning light. The DRL stands for Daytime Running Lights and will always be on unless you turn on your dashboard lights.
It all depends which warning lights are on?!
it's Daytime Running Lights.

To replace the dashboard lights for the ventilation controls on a 2005 vw passat you need its user manual.
It is important to pay attention to the warning lights on the dashboard. When the ABS and brake lights flask that means there is something wrong with the brake system.
