I am also wondering this because i have to right an essay about jack London and his use of symbolism, specifically in "to build a fire." I read war and the closest thing i can think of is the fact that the apples symbolize temptation because he was supposed to be scouting for the enemy but he went out of his way to get apples for himself while he was hiding in the house. But then again, Jack London was not a very religious person seeing as he was misguided as a child and his mother had some crazy religion or thoughts or somehting like that. I mention religion because in The Bible, the apple that Adam bites into symbolizes temptation. There could be a link between the two but i doubt it seeing as he wasnt religious...Hope this helps!
