"Islam" means "submission," to Allah, the One and Only Creator of the Heavens and the Earth. The holy book of Islam is the Kor'an, which is by Muslims believed to be the final revelation to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). There are many similarities between Islam and former religious revelations such as Christianity and Judaism, as well as many major differences that cause controversy over several inter-religious issues. In general, Muslims believe in The One and only God, Allah, and are expected to perform daily prayers, as well as give charity, fast for the holy month of Ramadan, and make a pilgrimage to the Ka'ba in Mecca. The Holy Kor'an is a guide for living for Muslims. It talks greatly about morality and how a Muslim should his/her life, by being self-less, generious, and caring. The Holy Kor'an also urges Muslims to seek knowledge all throughout their lives, and to strive for the improvement of mankind. The Holy Kor'an is not only a literary masterpiece, but a way of life that, when contrasted with the media portrayal of Muslims, is very different. There is much more to Islam, these are just some basic ideas to give you. My advice is to not take everything for truth that you hear in the media, read about the religion itself. Go to the scriptures, and not the people who follow the scriptures, sometime wrongly.
