The Royal Canadian Mounted Police are the national police of Canada. Most cities in Canada have municipal police services, and there are similar services at the provincial (equivalent to a U.S. state) level. The RCMP handles law enforcement anywhere that the other police services do not operate. The RCMP also functions as the Canadian equivalent of the FBI, handing investigations on a national level. Unlike the United States, Canada does not have many specialized federal law enforcement agencies like the DEA, ATF, Border Patrol, Secret Service, etc. Most all of these functions are handled by the RCMP.
That said, the most common place to encounter the RCMP is on Canadian highways, where they function as a highway patrol.
Royal Canadian Mounted Police was created in 1920.
Royal Canadian Mounted Police Foundation was created in 1994.
