In the late 30's and the 40's they were called Pump Jockeys. Today they are probably best known as Non-Existent or as Extinct. Self service is the rule rather then an exception, and yes, they did actually pump fuel by hand into a glass bowl which in turn was drained into the vehicles tank. No electrical pumps and no dircect fill. The customer actually saw the fuel that was being purchased for his dollar. Today a metered pump that is checked out by an unseen bueraucrat at least every few years doles out your unseen 45 dollar glob of gasoline with the swipe of a debit card while you personally clean the bugs off your windshield, ignore the oil level and praise technology.
