This depends on:
Plastic housings are wiped only with a rag only! If that won't do it needs replacing.
Aluminum or cast iron:
Gaskets get cleaned off with a scraper, CAREFULLY!
Hose sealing areas get cleaned with a rag or if needed a piece of 600 or 1000 grit emery cloth
If I am cleaning on the car for show, aluminum gets polished with neverdull (brand name)
Cast iron gets cleaned at install and clear coated
Plastic just gets auto paint polish
Housing in clean conditions.
Just clean it with rubbing alchol then wash it off with water
You can clean it with a bit of methylated spirits, don't use hot water because it will damage the thermometer also try not to use soap because it does not completely clean.

There is no difference in the effectiveness of glass or plastic. Glass is more fragile for breaking but easier to keep clean, plastic is safer for not breaking, and harder to keep clean longer. It is a personal choice.
You have to pry the lens from the housing... The outer lens is attached to the housing with Black RTV. I had to clean mine out. You can get away without removing them from the car, but your car will reek of Vinegar forever as the RTV dries!!! I know this from experience, mine were filled with dust when I bought my last car.Matcheskat
That would be a garage.
