You can Spay her but if you don't want to you can do the following.

Give her a Massage, Especially in the hip area where she may be bloated

Let her Sleep most of the day but not all day.

Take her out for walks but with a doggy dipper. but keep other dogs away from her

Keep other animals away from her, Because she feels uncomfortable she will be very moody.

You also may consider doing something special for your dog. Something sweet and creamy will do the trick like plane yogurt or homemade Ice cream made with lactose free milk, or just the lactose free milk

GO TO A PET STORE OR FLEA MARKET AND YOU CAN GET PET PANNIES AND PADS. THEY RUN ABOUT $12.00 TO $40.00 DOLLARS A PAIR THEN YOU CAN GET THIN PANIE LINER TO GO IN THE PANNIES.IF YOU HAVE A LARGE PET YOU WILL NEED THE LARGER LINGER AS THE PANNIES HAVE A PLACE FOR THEM.MAKE SURE YOU CHECK YOURE DOGS WEIGHT AS IT WILL BE ON THE BOX OF PANNIES. THE ANIMAL WILL HAVE A HOLE IN THE PANNIES TO GO. GOOD LUCK HOPE THIS HELPS

Some dogs bleed heavier than others when they are in heat (what you referred to as a dog period). Generally they keep themselves clean (a bit gross, but natural for them I guess), however if you're worried about any mess I know of many people who put a pair of pants on their dogs, with a hole cut out for the tail to go through. She won't like it at first but will get used to it. Unless you plan to breed her I suggest getting her spayed. Its much better for the dog, can avoid distressing complications such as phantom pregnancies, accidental real pregnancies, and there is evidence to show it can help prevents some female dog cancers as she gets older.

If you do not want you dog to become pregnant, the best thing would to keep you dog away from male dogs. You should also try to keep the dog inside as much as possible, as male dogs are very crafty when trying to get to a female dog in heat. I would suggest keeping the dog in a kitchen so that you can clean up the mess left behind (blood) easier than if the dog were on carpet.

Female dogs getting their period is known as being "in heat." They are fertile at that time, and sometimes for a few days after you think it is over. (No kidding, believe me about that one!) What you do depends on your intentions. You can of course breed them, although you really shouldn't unless she and her mate are exceptional specimens, you know a lot about the breed, and are prepared to keep all the puppies yourself just in case--plus take back any whose placement doesn't work out.

If there are males around, you will need to keep the female crated any time there is a-n-y possibility of the males getting to her (or keep the makes crated, of course.)

To keep blood from getting on floor, furniture, rugs, etc., they make little panties that the dog can wear--check large pet supply stores like Petsmart and Petco, or maybe your vet.

Remember, female dogs don't need to have babies to "feel fulfilled." Also remember, male dogs can smell a female in heat from a l-o-n-g way away, be sure not to let her out alone.

You should probably consider getting her spayed. Saves a lot of trouble and worry, will help prevent her from getting cancer, and there are way too many unwanted and unloved puppies put to sleep as it is.

There's a few things that you want to consider. Firstly, when she's in heat, unless you want her to become pregnant, you need to keep her away from male dogs that will try to mate with her. Don't let her out of your sight during walks as her scent is strong to male dogs and they will pick up on it easily. To help protect staining of fabrics and to assist with pregnancy prevention, put a snug fitting doggy diaper on her. Be careful, unless the diaper fits well, it can work its way off through body motion and male dogs can try to manipulate themselves past the diaper protection through aggressiveness. If you want to alleviate the dog menstruating, you can have her spayed.
