Check your Transmission Fluid. If it's automatic, it could simply be low.
No, a bad EGR valve would cause pinging at driving speeds or stalling at idle. Have you checked the distributor cap? Fuel filter?
Have you tried a new distributor cap & rotor ?? ,as, they may be corroded/pitted.

Yes, if the spark plug wires can be connected to the distributor and works.
I had to change the distributer completely out of my truck it had over 210k on the engine. The distributer was worn out. The control module which I believe is located either on the distributor (special socket needed) or on the inner fender.
make sure you changed your fuel filter
