Cats are the biggest killer of birds worldwide. They enjoy it, and are very good at it. They don't mean any harm in it, it's just their nature. Best thing to do is keep your next bird safely in it's cage.
You may be able to save a bird if it gets bitten by a cat, but it depends on how severely it was bitten. Take the bird away from the cat and place the bird in a safe, warm place. If it seems able to fly, it might do best if you release it, but if the bird is seriously injured, call a veterinarian or the Humane Society for help.
Well, the first thing you must do is get a hold of the bird. If it won't let you get a hold of it, for example flying up into a tree and acting perfectly normal, it probably doesn't need your help. But if it's lying there helpless or something, you run out and grab it. Be careful not to hurt it when you pick it up. Lift and carry it gently. Take it inside, put it in a nice, cozy box lined with a towel. Now, if it has wounds, then you need to assess those. If the wounds are serious as in it's bleeding, then press a bandage or towel onto the wound to stop the bleeding. If the bird has a broken wing, leg, etc., then you need to call a vet or a wildlife expert, like at a park. Take the bird there, they'll fix it up. If the wound is not serious, I would still recommend you calling someone because bird wounds are a lot harder to treat than other animals. Then, when the bird is healed, take it home and release it.
