It depends on your relationship with your ex's son. If you are on good terms with the boy then you'd obviously want to attend his birthday party, and he'd be disappointed if you didn't.
This isn't about you or your ex, or your or her present relationship arrangements, or even the party itself: it's about the boy.
You must decide what he'd want, and do that. No concern with so-called manners or etiquette should be considered above the perfectly normal feelings of a child in such a simple matter.

The arrival time of the answer to this question is now. The arrival of his ex-wife at his birthday party caused him to panic.
"Can my friend come to your party so I won't be the only girl there?"

* This is up to your son or daughter to decide. If they agree then feel free to invite the ex, but if not respect his/her wishes. If this is a surprise party for your son or daughter and if you know they are in touch with their ex then you can still invite them, but if they don't keep in touch then it wouldn't right to invite the ex.
Well, your ex can be as difficult as he likes. He can refuse to hand his son over to your husband for contact though, unless you both have agreed in writing to allow 3rd party change-overs. Your ex cannot dictate that his son may not ride in a car with anyone while he resides with you. Once you have your son under your care his care arrangements are yours alone to decide. Of course you may also refuse to hand your son over if he sends someone else to collect him - Unless as previously stated you have both consented to 3rd party changeovers.
Um, nothing....he is your ex.
