Number one, you need to file the incident in your memory for future reference, so that next time your girlfriend asks you a question like that you know to lie your socks off. Women: This is why men lie; we do it because we've learned the hard way that telling you the truth is never a good idea.

When the female of the species asks this type of question, they usually don't want an answer, they want a compliment or a reassurance (I'm sorry if this sounds sexist, but it's true). On the rare occasion when they really do want your honest opinion, they still won't mind hearing the compliment or reassurance first, and you should proceed further than that only after repeated questions, and do so cautiously and with plenty of weasel words designed to imply that you might potentially be willing to concede that there may, in fact, be men who would consider the other girl at least marginally more attractive than a warthog, though personally she isn't your "type".

That's likely your most productive approach now as well: tell her that when you said the other girl was "pretty", what you really meant was that most men would probably think she was above average, though not by any means nearly as pretty as your girlfriend, whom you didn't even think to compare the other girl to because frankly it's hardly fair to compare someone who's merely slightly above average to the prettiest girl in the world, and so on.

If your girlfriend is honest enough about herself to possibly detect a certain amount of dissemblance in the above, then you should point out qualities your girlfriend believes herself to be strong in which the other girl lacks. Things like "Well, I guess she's pretty enough, if you like that type (remember: weasel like a mustelid!), but after you get to know her you realize she's shallow/mean/conceited/dumb, and I could never really be attracted to a girl like that."
