One essentially listens to the Word of God, attentively. The Liturgy of the Word is God actually speaking to you through His priests and ministers. As it is God, Himself, who is speaking to you, you need to listen with reverence, respect, and your full attention. The readings are taken, one from the Old Testament, one from the writings of the apostles (N/A for Weekday Masses), and one from the Gospel. This is followed by the Homily. Both the Gospel and the Homily are said by only the priest.
