The only thing you can do is be empathetic, he is your girlfriends ex for a reason and it is unfortunate if he has problems enough to hurt himself but it really isn't an issue YOUR girlfriend should get involved with. If she gets involved with him at this point he will be getting what he wants - her attention. Individuals do stuff to hurt themselves for attention derived from selfishness not because they necessarily are interested but want control still.
