This depends on many different factors, including gender, hobbies, interests, and, interestingly enough, mental capacity. Having just turned thirteen myself, I believe that I can provide some useful information for the inquirer. If you know the person rather well, answer these questions: Do they enjoy reading? If so, what type of books? Romance? Fantasy? Action? Classics? Are they on the more artistic side? Could they do with a new set of paints or charcoal pencils? Do they prefer outdoor activities? What sports do they play? Do they play any instruments? But remember: Just because you like something doesn't necessarily mean that your friend will like it too. For example, if you are a diehard girly-girl who never goes without your nail polish, think twice before buying that Basketball-shaped purse for your more tomboyish, basketball-playing friend. On the other hand, if you really don't know this person too well, consider a gift card. That way, they can purchase whatever they desire. Just keep in mind: make sure the retail outlet that the gift card is from is a store that your friend will enjoy shopping at. If I were in your position, I wouldn't purchase a Barnes and Noble giftcard for my football-playing, school-hating guy friend.
