As with all legal issues, that depends upon jurisdiction. For example, here in Canada (where I am typing) there is no death penalty, no matter what you do - although the police can still shoot you in self defense, if you are shooting at them. That is something like a death penalty although it is not exactly the same. In the US you can be sentenced to death for such things as multiple murder and high treason.

In some countries it will be enough to say that their leader is mad.
There are many countries that keep their population under a hard heel.
One are not allowed free speech and if performing free speech it can mean death penalty.
In the US as I see it, you have a fairly decent system of law.
It is possible to actually kill somebody and get away with it due to self defence or to prevent somebody from great injury.
If killing a person by accident, then it is considered as an accident. Still punishable, but not by death.
If killing in a most disgusting way just for the sake of making money or just for the sake of the thrill of killing itself, the death penalty will be discussed. (other causes not excluded)
Death penalty is used where one think there is little hope for the person to ever become better and be a positive resource to the society ever again.
One must on the other hand be 100% sure that it is the correct person who get sentenced to death. If there is a possible doubt regarding who did what, then death penalty is not an option.
I do not think one actually have to kill somebody to get death penalty.
A most disgusting person who sweet-talks other people to do his/her dirty work in a most disgusting manner might receive the final judgment as well. Especially if an entire society is touched by the repeated evilness of that person.

∙ 12y agoThis depends on what country or region you are interested in. Lots of countries only use the death penalty for crimes such as murder, but other countries such as China who have much stricter laws and regulations, will use it for things like burglary or trespassing.
