Each Midshipman receives a fixed percentage of the salary earned by a Second Lieutenant or Ensign and that amounts to about $7,200 and is subject to both state and Federal Income Taxes as well as social security deductions. They have an established account used for the purchase of their uniforms, laundry, dry cleaning, haircuts, books, computers, activity fees and shoe repair. A fixed amount is deposited monthly into a personal checking account. They do not become wealthy but the amount is sufficient for their needs. Tuition, room, utilities and family style, high quality and nutritious meals are furnished at no charge.
