a hot glue gun works good. If you can use a kelm do so
If you have two pieces of clay that you want to connect, you score the clay. Scoring is scratching both pieces of clay where you want them to connect. Slip is watered down clay, and acts as glue when placed on the scored clay.

I have never heard of clay exploding unless your talking about the way clay explodes when its in a kiln for art purposes. In that case its not really the clay exploding, but the air bubbles inside of it becoming too great in pressure that the clay "pops" like a bubble letting the air out and leaving a mess.
Clay, usually, cost about a dollar, $1.00, an ounce... When it's Palmer's... if u go to Wally World, Wal-Mart, it cost about two to five dollars.
It depends on what type of clay you are using. If you are using clay for pottery and such then you will need a kilm. If you are using air dry clay there are two ways for you to dry it faster if you are the impatient type or you have to have it dry as fast as you can for a project that is due soon. The first is to use a blow dryer. Use a low setting and keep it about four inches away from the clay. The second way is to dry it in a oven at 200 degrees. If you want the full directions on how to do both then look it up. There are many sights for your type of question. Good luck with your project.

Slip is clay mixed with lost of water and is used after scoring clay to hold two pieces of clay together.
