Your architecture licensure comes from your local state licensure board (the same people that license doctors and lawyers). You have to go through NCARB (National Council of Architectural Registration Boards) to get your permission to take the ARE (architectural registration exam). The American Institute of Architects is an organization of architects and interns that represent a large portion of the architectural community. You don't get licensed through them and you can be a licensed architect and not be a member. If you are a licensed architect, you can become a member which requires additional continuing education hours (above and beyond what is required by your state licensure board) and membership fees (at the local, state and national level).
