First and most important: stay away from drug-related activities. Right now Mexico is having a hard time trying to keep drugs from entering the Unites States; this conflict is known as the Mexican War on Drugs. This in turn, has led many drug cartels to desperately try to keep these drugs reaching the US-Mexico border, so most northern cities such as Reynosa, Torreon, Juarez or Tijuana are quite dangerous to stay.
Besides that, most of the country is quite safe, but you should keep your belongings with you and using the safe deposit boxes in your hotel to keep your valuables from being stolen.
Another thing is the water. Most foreigners drink tap water, which is not safe to drink in Mexico due to aging infrastructure and ineffective chlorination. This usually leads to the Montezuma's Revenge. You should drink bottled water and keeping yourself from asking ice in your drinks.
