What do you put in a hamster cage?

In a hamster cage you need, a wheel for exercise. A house with bedding inside for sleeping in. Wood shavings to line the cage. A water bottle and a food bowl. Possibly a toy to keep them occupied if you wish.

Obviously a hamster..... then you have a water bottle attached to the sides of the cage, newspaper on the floor to make it easy to lean up its mess, some straw or hay and a food bowl preferably filled with food

I agree with the answer above except for the hay/straw and newspaper. I would say use aspen or cedar bark chips; it will make your hamster and cage smell better for a while. You can also use potties; this way you won't have to change your hamsters cage every week, just the potties (but always change your hamsters cage frequently. If you have potties I would consider cleaning the cage every month. If you don't have potties I consider cleaning the cage every week or so). Another thing you should add is a running wheel; hamsters love to run and in the wild hamsters can run 8 miles! So you should seriously consider buying a running wheel. Also, chew toys and chew sticks are great for your hamster; hamsters teeth keep growing continuously and need to chew. Plus, it adds some fun and variety to your hamsters cage.

Your hamster could cut his/her feet on the rocks (depending on how sharp they are).

You can, but it wouldn't help the hamster much.

Your hamster probably wouldn't like it since pine cones are rather big.

It would just be taking up space in the cage.
