What is the difference between rs232 and rs485 port?

Difference between Rs232 and RS485 is Only Distance RS232 is not for long or far distance .. but RS485 can be use for LONGEST distance ..RS232 is single ended communication where as RS485 is Differential communication.Max.no of receivers in RS232 is only ONE, whereas in RS485 is 32.Max.no of transmitters in RS232 is only ONE whereas in RS485 is 32.IN RS232 there is no pin to change from transmitter mode receiver mode. But, In RS485 have DE pin to set transmitter mode and RI to set receiver mode.

What are the other serial communication standards other than RS232?

Difference between Ethernet and RS 485?

RS232 is for point to point communication where as RS 485 is for multidpoint communication, Voltage level and speed differ Hi frnds,, There are few points which v can discuss on these are 1) Ya first main important point is RS232 is point to point communication n RS485 is multidrope communication which means ... on RS232 u can not connect more than two device... RS485 u can connect upto I think max 128 device theorically..(its depends on noise level as well as on distance and burd rate also) Practicall as max 32... 2)Voltage level of RS232 is -3 to -25 for 1 +3 to +25V for 0 while RS485 is based on differential voltage (0-5v) diff is 240mV for 1 and -240mV for 0. 3)distance limitation is 100meter for RS232 and 1Km for RS485, 4)noise immunity is high for RS485 as it is balance protocol and differencial protocol.. 5)Software point of view u need to set transmit enable line in RS485 rest of the software is same... 6)pin for 232 is (Rx Tx and GND) while in case of RS485 it is (A(+) and B(-)) no need to transmit GND..signal

What are the types of serial communication?

There are four main types. 1:RS232 2:EIA232 3:EIA 422 4:RS485 The major difference lies in Range and Noise immunity.Hope this could answer what you need Wajahat

What is the maximum distance of RS 485?

It depends on the wires' diameter you use, and the network topology you will use. Generally say the bigger the diameter you use, the distance longer. But it is the best you use it in BUS of hand in hand. If you use RS485 in tree or star network, it can not be long because of the signal's reflex on lines. What i said above must be twisted-pair, otherwise the distance can not by far. Also you need to consider the data rate you use. the lower data rate you use the longer distance you will get. But all above i said, even in the best condition, RS485 is only 300~500 meters long. If longer distance you need, you have to consider other way, such as RS485 module which use other technology to expand the distance, just only RS485 interface but not RS485 signal on the lines. For example, the PWBS01H series module i used before. It makes RS485 be 3000m distance, also supports tree or start network topology. here is the link for PWBS01H series module.slideshare.net/eddiegao/bestrong-rs485-powerbusmodules

What is the function of RS 485 connection?

The symmetrical pin layout of the RJ11 sockets on the Unitronics PLCs allows an easy way of interconnecting the PLCs with both RS232 and RS485 communications. For RS232a crossover cable is used where pin 1 is connected with pin 6 at the other connector, pin 2 with pin 5, etc. This interconnects the transmit and receive signals of both PLCs, and also the handshaking signals DTR and DSR. If handshaking is not necessary, an ordinary 4 wire telephone cable could be used, provided that the pins are cross-connected as shown in the picture below. Otherwise a full 6 wire cable must be used. Two wire telephone cables will not function because in that case the ground signal levels on both sides will be floating. Unitronics RJ11 RS232 crossover cableRJ11 plug 1RJ11 plug 2Function16DTRDSR25Signal ground34TxDRxD43RxDTxD52Signal ground61DSRDTRRS485 is in its design a different interface from RS232. The RS485 interface allows the creation of multipoint networks. The normal way to implement this is with a two wire system with differential signal levels. These signals are commonly called A and B in RS485 systems. The A signals of all devices should be connected with each other and the same goes for the B signals. Therefore for RS485 communications no crossover cable is used. To prevent noise to interfere with the communications, often twisted pair cable is used. The diagram below shows a basic RS485 cable for use with the RJ11 socket on Unitronics PLCs. You can easily connect more devices by splitting the cable at one connector and adding another cable to it.Unitronics RJ11 RS485 cableRJ11 plug 1RJ11 plug 2Function11A (+)A (+)

what is the maximum recommended length for a standard RS-232 cable?

Depends what you mean by a serial cable - Fibre, Ethernet, RS232, RS485, RS422, USB, HDMI, SMPTE292 are all examples of serial communications media. RS232 max length 50 ft Ethernet max length 100 m

What is 232 in RS232 and MAX232?

The difference between max232 and rs232 is the voltage levels of the rs232 are high. In order to reduce those voltage means to convert those voltage levels to TTL logic levels we use max232 integrated chip which is a dual driver/ receiver.

How can you link RS232 serial data on COM1 to output on COM2?

Yes on a modern computer you will need a USB to 9 pin RS232 converter or previously use the LPT parallel port.

If there are RS232-to-USB adapters why are there no USB-to-RS232 serial adapters?

RS-232 serial ports are far slower than USB ports. With very few exceptions, devices that use USB ports would be impractical to use on a serial port.
