If you're printing something really big and you don't want the file size to be huge, vector is the only way. Example: I wrapped a 20-foot bass boat for a Famous Bass Angler in January. By the time we went around the transom and curved the vinyl in to match the bow, the sheet was probably 26 feet long. The wrap was really graphically intense--lots of curves, flames, sponsor logos--and only needed about 175MB of disk to hold both sides. To you, that might be huge, but come to my shop and I can pull out 600MB files all day long. 175MB is tiny to me.

Vector images are good because you can scale them without losing quality, for example you can make poster 2 by 2 meters from 2 by 2 cm vector image without losing sharpness of edges. You can always convert vector image to bitmap whenever you need this conversion but bitmap images will lose their quality if you enlarge them.

What does Vector and Bitmap mean?

Vector and bitmap are both image files. Bitmapped images are images that are stored on a pixel by pixel basis and because of this, when you enlarge the image it can appear blocky. A vector image is constructed from dots, lines, shapes, etc. Each part has a particular position within the image with it's own dimensions. Because vector images are constructed using images, they can be enlarged without loss of image quality. Vector images do not get the blocky appearance of an enlarged bitmap image.
