BC is a Christian expression that has become commonly used by many people, especially in western cultures like North America, Europe, and Latin America. It stands for "Before Christ." It uses the birth of Jesus as the 0 point when counting the years, so that before he was born is BC and after he was born is referred to as AD (Latin for "in the year of our Lord").

It should be noted that some modern scholars object to using Christian religious belief to mark time (Jesus was not born in the year 0, and not everyone believes he was the "Christ"). Thus, some people prefer to use a more neutral term: BCE (Before the Common Era) and CE (Common Era). In other words, we commonly accept that this is the year 2012, even though we know the world is much older than just 2012 years.
