What does general lees invasion of the north suggest about his qualities as a general and a leader?

During the American Civil War, General Robert E. Lee's attempted invasions of the North in 1862 and 1863 suggest various things about his qualities as a leader and general. What would happen if a leader did not have qualities?

If a leader did not have the qualities needed to be a leader then they should have never been assigned the role of the leader. Some people are not assigned leader but just looked at as the leader and when someone is looked up to people typically follow what that person does; so if they do not have the right qualities then most likely the team will not be all that great.

Why does lee's invasion of the north suggest about his qualities as a general and a leader?

He was known to be an excellent officer before the invasion. In West Point he was first in his class, a well respected officer, and was moving up fast in the army when the civil war started. He had commanded the troops at Harpers Ferry. Lincoln offered him the command of Union troops, but his home state West Virginia was confederate, so he resigned and went to command of confederate army. It is interesting that Grant at West Point in the same class as Lee, but he was the last in the class, he was not well respected, and was considered an looser for the most part. Yet, he defeated Lee.
