The 'P' in any American WW2 aircraft meant Pursuit, in British, known as a fighter. The 'P' designation gave way to 'F' somewhere around P-82, later models of which were known as F-82. This was in 1946.
The P-38 was the Lightning, not the Mustang. There were at least 14 fighter versions plus two photo-recce and a night fighter.
The name "P38" is a slang term, and not an official name. The original P38 was the German 9mm Pistol (P) made in 1938 (38). The name was borrowed for the C-Ration opener. Still have mine on my dogtags!
Allison. As used in the P38 Lightning for example.
