That men do things, without thinking of the consequences. Both men assumed that the dog would win, and be fine. In the end, the dog was so hurt by the weasel that they had to put her down. When Robert is over the dogs grave he said "Hussy, you have more spunk in you, that a lot of us menfolk have brains" Meaning, men do things without thinking about it, because they assume that because we have been doing it for so long, it's right. The act of weaseling the dog ending in two useless deaths.
