SOS is the international distress signal from back in the days when ships typically communicated using Morse Code.

Contrary to urban legend, it's not an abbreviation and doesn't "stand for" anything ("Save Our Ship/Souls" is a common claim). It was chosen because it's a short signal composed of easy-to-remember characters (in Morse: ... --- ...), so that anyone hearing it, even if they weren't proficient enough in Morse to understand a longer more complicated message, would know it was an emergency call and get someone who did understand Morse to get the details.
