Sal broke her leg, and her mother had to carry her home. She went into labor that night. The baby died, and her mother was bleeding out. They had to transport her to the hospital, and they had to do surgery. Her mom would never be able to have another child, even though she wanted several. This was a very telling part in the story, as it gave us some insight on a reason for her mother's depression.
