Are there many lakes in LA? As sports enthusiasts know, teams' locales are not forever, and when a team moves, the name often moves with it. Utah's pro Basketball team originated in New Orleans, home of jazz; hence, Utah Jazz. Not willing to be NBA-less for long, New Orleans is now the home of the Hornets, which relocated from Charlotte.
The LA Lakers came from Minnesota, Land of 10,000 Lakes. And Memphis' Grizzlies packed up and moved from Vancouver. In 1958, two popular New York baseball teams, the Dodgers and the Giants, moved to California: the Brooklyn Dodgers became the LA Dodgers, and the NY Giants are the San Francisco Giants. Willie Mays was one of the players who moved with the Giants, and on September 22, 1969, hit his 600th home run for his new/old team. And long-time Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda, whose birthday is September 22, 1927, made his major league debut with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1954.
