It would probably be around $8 to $10, not including tips and extra fees (such as the $1 surcharge from 4 PM to 8 PM, and the 50-cent surcharge from 8 PM to 6 AM).

But you really don't need to take a cab. You can just take the subway.

At Grand Central Station, take the S shuttle train (color code grey) west across 42nd Street, from Grand Central (East 42nd) to Times Square (West 42nd).

At the Times Square Station, transfer to the Downtown 1-2-3 (the red line) or the Downtown A-C-E (the blue line) one stop, from 42nd Street (Times Square) to 34th Street (Penn Station).

Note that the A-C-E line does not stop at the Times Square Station, exactly. The A-C-E line runs up and down 8th Avenue, while the Times Square Station is at 7th Avenue.

There is an underground tunnel connecting the A-C-E to the Times Square Station, though. So if you want to take the A-C-E, you will first have to walk through the tunnel from Times Square. THEN you can transfer to the A-C-E.

You sure can, but you don't need to. You can just as easily take the subway (or walk, as it's only about a mile to a mile and a half). The subway is also much cheaper. A cab will cost $10 to $15 depending on traffic, while the subway is currently only $2.25.

At Penn Station, take the Uptown 1-2-3 (the red line) or the Uptown A-C-E (the blue line) ONE stop, from 34th Street (Penn Station) to 42nd Street (Times Square).

Note: if possible, it is preferable to take the 1-2-3 (the red line) instead of the A-C-E (the blue line). The A-C-E runs up and down 8th Avenue, while the 1-2-3 (and the Times Square Station) are at 7th Avenue. The A-C-E line is connected to the Times Square Station via a tunnel, but it's a long, hot, smelly tunnel. If you take the 1-2-3 you will save yourself the walk (and the bad smell).

Anyway. At the Times Square Station, transfer to the S shuttle train (color code grey) east across 42nd Street, from Times Square (West 42nd) to Grand Central Station (East 42nd).

If you want to walk: you will exit Penn Station on either 7th Avenue (the east entrance) or 8th Avenue (the west entrance), at 33rd to 34th Street.

Walk north on 7th or 8th Avenue until you reach 42nd. Then make a right, and walk east to Lexington. Grand Central is at 42nd and Lexington.

There's no shuttle directly from Grand Central to Penn Station. The S shuttle train (color code grey) is part of the subway system. It runs between 42nd Street-Grand Central and 42nd Street-Times Square. Then you transfer at Times Square to the Downtown 1-2-3 (the red line), 1 stop, from 42nd Street-Times Square to 34th Street-Penn Station.

Subway fare is currently $2.50 for a paper Single Ride Ticket, and $2.25 per ride for a plastic pay-per-ride Metrocard.
