What does a car act like when it needs the timing belt replaced?

It will sound like it's going to start when you turn the key but it never does. Keep in mind that many other issues can give you the same effect of not starting.

What I was told is that you look at the belt; if you see more than 7 "cracks" per inch, it is time to replace the timing belt. A timing belt can look perfectly fine and be ready to break. This is why they are replaced at a scheduled mileage or every 10 years no matter what they look like. So the bottom line is you cannot know when it needs replacing by just looking at it. Your owners manual will list when it needs replacing.

Sounds like the timing is off just a bit ur getting the start of detonation which makes the pinging noise ur hearing. That is the most logical (as or if ) it was not pinging before the timing belt was replaced.

To me, it sounds like a timing belt (chain) needs replaced but are you sure there is no spark? If it just quit on you w/out notice, tunrs over but will not start-you likely have to replace the timing belt. Same thing happened to me- Toyato Tacoma w/about 162k miles on it.
