if you are speaking about the cap connected to old style points based ignition systems (??) - this is going back a long time, but I think this is correct (anyone?) - the capacitor is connected to the ground side of the points. When the points are closed 12V is flowing through them energizing the primary coils in the spark-coil. When the points open the energy field in the primary coils 'collapses' inducing a current into the tightly-wound secondary coils, which changes the 12V to (varies by spark coil) 20,000V (50,000 in some I seem to remember) to power the spark plugs.

Now the capacitor - while the points are closed and 12V is flowing through them high amperage is wanted but you don't want a direct short to ground, so the capacitor acts as a ground and 'absorbs' the incoming 12V that are coming through the points. When the points open the energy stored in the capacitor instantly dissipates with no arching/grounding problems, the power just 'goes away'. Some Electrical Engineer can explain that one better than I.

If the capacitor goes bad you will not have proper current flow through the points, you could be going straight to ground, or the cap is leaking so will no longer accept energy to hold. If that cheap part with 1 wire and 1 screw goes bad, no spark.

Hope this helps. Boy I love the way old ignitions systems worked, easy to understand, easy to maintain.

What capacitor value is good for car battery?

A car battery does not need a capacitor as it's regulating capacity (when in good condition) is well above any capacitor you can fit into your car.

How do you wire a capacitor to an amp?

Positive post of capacitor is connected to the heavy amp cable. The ground terminal (or case) of the capacitor is connected to the car's ground or a ground wire that leads to the car's chassis. That's it.

When should you put a capacitor in your car?

When a stereo system drains too much battery power, it is time to add a capacitor. The capacitor will not increase the battery, but instead will modulate it allowing for additional stereo usage.

Can a capacitor hook directly to a car stereo without using an amp?

No. The capacitor is there to store the power so that the power isnt drained from the car at once. It helps reduce the strain placed on the vehicles electric system.

What are the steps behind installing a car audio capacitor?

First, the capacitor must be charged. Use a voltmeter, and when it reaches 12 volts, the capacitor is charged. The capacitor should then be installed near the car audio amplifier. Keep the negative wire attached to the battery. Then, a ground wire from the negative post on the capacitor to the car's chassis on the chassis's bare metal ground point. Next, the power wire needs to be disconnected from the amplifier's power input. Connect the wire to the positive post on the capacitor. A new power wire needs to be connected from the capacitor's positive post to the amplifier's power input. Install a 16 gauge wire from the capacitor's remote turn-on post to the amplifier's remote input. Then disconnect the negative wire from the battery.
