Any signs of wear indicate coin circulation. Look at the year the penny was made, and compare the it with the wear. You can definitely tell if a penny has been used just by looking at it.

There is, however, a 1922 (no mint mark) wheat penny worth about $500 in circulated condition and $20,000 in mint condition. The highest price penny like this is a 1944 Steel penny that is worth $100,000 in mint condition and $4,000 in circulated condition.
A 1898 Indian head penny in circulated condition is worth 1 to around 23 dollars in circulated condition. These coins are not rare.
It would look exactly the same as a 1945 Australian circulated Penny, except that there will be no dents, scratches or other surface damage, and it will probably be slightly darkened from the bright coppery appearance of a brand new coin, ie. "mint condition".
