Our baby was low-birth weight and she had trouble keeping warm. Her pediatrician told us that an infant's temperature should be at least 97 degrees and that anything less is considered a low body temperature. He told us to keep her wrapped up and to call him if her temp was lower than 97.

∙ 15y ago97.5 is too low. Our NICU would not release our baby unless he could keep his temp above this on his own (open air bassinet wearing clothes and blankets). Our ped was concerned that we had to take him outside wearing 2-3 layers in August and he was still having trouble keeping above a 97.5.

This word is is derived from Latin as it includes their words for Below(Hypo)+Heat or Temperature(Thermia). If you do have a low temperature for a prolonged period of time you should consult a Doctor as it could be caused by another illness or medical problem. On the other hand, if you have a low temperature for just a few hours it may be because of the temperature in your surroundings.
