Lung capacity is the amount the lungs can expand during respiration. Certain lung diseases (acute like pneumonia or chronic such as emphysema) can decrease the lung capacity or lung volume. Some chronic diseases make the lung tissue 'stiffen' so that it doesn't expand as well, but most diseases affect the ability of the lungs to inhale oxygen, exhale carbon dioxide, and to work properly under stress or exercise.

A normal lung capacity in a perfectly healthy person is 99-100%. The percent can drop some but still be adequate (for example, 95% is still acceptable).

As the lung capacity drops, the body can adjust some, but typically the person needs supplemental oxygen to assist in delivering oxygen into the body. However, if the lung tissue or aveloi (part of the lung structures) are damaged, then the supplemental O2 may not be enough to keep the person alive. As the condition worsens, the person may cough a lot, be extremely short of breath, feel very fatigued, and unable to ward off respiratory infections.
