The terms can sometimes mean the same thing: a self-contained smoke detector with a built-in fire alarm. However, they are technically different and can be obtained in many types.A fire alarm SYSTEM can contain smoke detectors, heat detectors, manual pull stations and other sensors related to fire protection, including switches that say the fire sprinklers or the commercial kitchen fire extinguisher has activated. All of these sensors and switches are wired to a fire alarm control panel that monitors them constantly for electrical trouble or for alarm conditions, relaying the alarm message to bells, sirens, strobe lights and maybe even calling the fire department. Most people say "smoke detector" when they mean "self-contained smoke alarm". The smoke alarm does not usually connect to anything other than maybe another smoke alarm or two, so they all make noise when there is a fire, but someone still has to remember to call the fire department.
Either there is smoke, or the battery is going dead.
If you mean to interfere with a smoke detector on an airplane, that would be a federal offense. If you cover up a smoke detector in your own house, that would be not be smart to do but is likely not illegal. For rental properties or office buildings, you would probably have to check local building and safety codes to find out if it is illegal, but covering one there would not be a smart thing to do. Many codes in public buildings require working detectors.
Hey there, I had this problem, do you live in a apartment block? If so, it is most likely connected to a main system, but the individual alarms still have 9v batteries in them to protect against power cuts, this battery is running low and needs replacing Or you can do what I did and just rip them off the ceiling in anger. Call the company that produces your detector an ask them. Other wise try your local fire department. Some detectors always flash to let you know that they're on and functioning properly. Although, it could be broken or low on battery power.
When the electricity goes out, a smoke detector may make a final beep as it's capacitor is discharged, as a warning. If the smoke detector has a battery backup, some detectors will beep just to let you know the power is off, and some other units will only beep when the power is off AND the battery is low. Usually there is a legend on the back of the unit that will tell you what the different beeps mean.
