Red X means that particular device is disabled.

You will see a symbol with red color cross (X mark) on the device icon which indicates that device is not working or disabled.
When the device is plugged into the Apple computer an icon will appear on the desktop. Open iPhoto and drag the photos to that icon. They will then be compied to that device.
Open the Device Manager, right-click the computer icon, and select "Scan for hardware changes."

Computer/Control panel and in vista there is an icon for mouse, click there to adjust settings. Or if you have a different op, control panel, device manager, look for your mouse in list.
Safely Remove Hardware

On your desktop, right click on the 'My Computer' icon. From the drop-down menu select 'Properties'. After that, click on the 'Hardware' tab and then select 'Device Manager'
