The bar represents the rank of the soldier. If they have bars on their helmet, it means they are higher ranking than other soldiers. I am not sure about one bar, but it is probably the rank for lieutenant. Two bars is a captain.

Addendum:A single white bar on a steel pot is the rank of 1st Lieutenant. Two white bars would be Captain. A single yellow bar would be 2nd Lieutenant. This is no longer a common practice, as rank is not typically prominently displayed in a combat situations and steel helmets (the "Steel Pot") are no longer issued.

Why did Soviet soldiers wear red stars on their hats?

The red star was the communist insignia. The white star is the US insignia. Although US Servicemen didn't wear the white star on their uniforms, we had it painted on almost everything else (jeeps, tanks, ships, airplanes, etc.). Each nation's military has it's own method and style of wearing their uniforms. For example, the Soviet (Russian) steel helmet was shaped differently than the US steel helmet...to look different, and be able to tell who was on which side when encountered on the battlefield. During the Vietnam War, US GI's often kept captured NVA Pith Helmets & brass belt buckles as war souvenirs; especially when they had RED STARS engraved or attached to them.

What do the three stars stand for on the Pittsburgh Steelers helmet?

The three stars on the Steeler's helmets are from a logo that was used by the steel industry. They represent the three materials used to produce steel: yellow for coal, orange for ore and blue for steel scrap.

Originally Germany entered the war in 1914 with a leather helmet with a spike atop it, called the Pickleshube(sp?). This was replaced in 1916 by their coal scuttle shaped M1916 all steel helmet. France produced their own all steel Adrian helmet, and the US adapted the British all steel Tommy helmet (also known as the Brodie, and later the Model 1917 "dough-boy" helmet).

First us army helmet?

Metal parade helmets based upon British (pith helmets) & modified German (Prussian) designs were in use in the 1880's by US Army personnel. However, practical protective steel helmets were not issued until WW1...the model 1917 British style "dough-boy" helmet. This helmet was used from 1917 until 1942; when it was replaced by the M-1 steel helmet (steel pot). The M-1 steel helmet fought it's last war in Vietnam.
