This process of loading the operating system is called booting the system. Windows is a graphical user interface(GUI) and is easy to learn in contrast to the DOS, which is command line Interface. An interface determines how you interact with your computer to do things like entering data or running programs like changing fonts, numbering lines, breaking the text into columns or spell checking.

If you're referring to the Compiz window manager which provides OpenGL 'window dressing" enhancements to the Linux GUI desktop, you should be able to just uninstall it and use some other window manager such as Metacity or Sawfish, etc.

Different Linux distributions can use different GUI's some will use Gnome or KDE. Most distributions will let you choose which you want. If you have an older machine you might want to use XFCE or LXDE window managers. If you are looking for a distribution you might want to try Linux Mint it uses all of these Window Managers.
