Candidates for elector are chosen by their political party and they pledge to support their party's nominee. They almost always honor their pledge and vote the way they said they would. However, there is nothing that be done to change their vote if they do not vote as expected. (I think they can be fined in some states.)

On the day after the first Monday of November every four years, each state appoints in a manner prescribed by the state a number of electors equal to the total number of Representatives and Senators representing the state in Congress, and the District of Columbia appoints a number of electors equal to the total number of Representatives and Senators they would have in Congress if they were a state, not to exceed the number of electors of the least populous state (currently Wyoming has fewer inhabitants than D.C.). Then on the Monday that falls after Dec. 12 and before Dec. 20, the electors of each state meet within their state to vote for the U.S. President and Vice-President.

Electors pledge to cast the vote that reflects the popular vote of their state (or district, in states where the electoral vote is split). However, in rare cases that promise is broken, as was the case with one electoral vote in each of the elections of 1976, 1988 and 2004.
