Magnesium Chloride melts ice form the sodium that it is made up of. the sodium in the compound allow the water to stay in a liquid state. allowing it to keep the piping under a hockey rink cool, without freezing the tubes.

The duration of time it takes to melt an ice cube with calcium chloride has several factors that come into play that can affect time it takes for the ice cube to melt. First how big the ice cube is, has a major role in how long it will take and second how much calcium chloride is being used. Because the cause for the ice to melt is a chemical reaction that changes the phyisical state of the ice cube the size of the ice cube and the amount of calcium chloride used are key factors in answering this question proberly. But for example the ice cube was of normal size like an ice cube that you would get from a normal ice tray that is in someone freezer and if the amount of calcium chloride used was approximately 1 tablespoon and you were in a room with an average room temperature of around 70 degrees Fahrenheit, it would take about 8 Min's for the ice cube to melt down completely

It lowers the freezing point of water so it is then too warm for the ice to stay frozen.. yup x]

It does a lot of things--acts as a source of calcium in food processing, absorbs water from the air and melts ice from roads, just for starters.
