Post offices experimented with precancelled stamps in an effort to reduce work load. Supposedly these stamps would not have to go throught the cancellation machine and eliminate that step in processing. The city and state the stamp was sold in was printed on the face of the stamp. This also made it difficult if someone stole the stamps to resell them in another place.

A cancelled stamp is one that has been used. The cancellation mark is that applied when the item goes through the post office to be mailed, so that the stamp cannot be reused.

What is the value of a first issue page of Elvis stamp These are not cancelled?

If they aren't cancelled how would we know they are a first issue page? If you mean a sheet of the Elvis Stamps, they can still be used for face value of postage. You might be able to sell the sheet for about twice the face value.

What does the stamp OT mean?

Stamps come in various forms mint (not used postally or any other way) mounted mint (when a person mounts the stamp on a hinge to store as part of a collection) or used through the post office. When a person generally a collector buys a stamp from a philatelic bureau he may ask for the stamp to be CTO (cancelled to order). So the post office will actually cancel the stamp with a post office cancel. This is done for two reasons a collector will collect stamps in this manner or they will collect the specific post office cancel. When the stamp is cancelled it will not be able to be used postally. Hope this helps

What does the phrase 'postal cancellation' mean?

When you buy a stamp, you pre-pay for the delivery of the letter bearing the stamp. So that stamps are not re-used, and the Post Office cheated out of their few pennies, when a letter is mailed, the postage stamp is "cancelled" by an ink stamp across it, showing that it has now been used. The ink stamp is usually also a "post mark"- showing when and where the letter was mailed.

What is the dollar value of uncancelled Jefferson 1 cent stamp?

I assume mean the green stamp from the 50's. You should not pay more than $0.20 for one. This is a common stamp which is easily obtainable. No stamp in good condition is worthless to a collector. Mint US stamps are always worth their face value if one can find use for them for postage. The minimum retail price for single stamps varies with the dealer but is around 15 to 25 cents. Common mint stamps retail for about twice face if this is more than the minimum. As for selling common stamps-- dealers do not buy them one at a time. They get them by buying collections or accumulations of thousands of stamps. They usually have all the common stamps they can sell because they get them along with the scarcer stamps.

What does it mean when a postage stamp in hinged?

Briefly hinges are used to attach stamps to album pages. Hinges usually leave a mark on the back of the stamps. For a mint stamp, this disturbs the gum, which some collectors don't like. For a used stamp it really doesn't matter, as the stamp can be safely soaked and any remnants removed without affecting the value. Collectors usually are will to pay more for stamps that are "never hinged", especially mint stamps. See Related Link

What does the term 'A-Stamp' mean?

A-Stamp means a rubber like personlized message. This allow's the user to quickly apply the information they want created to easily be placed where necessary. Example, many companies or school's use A-Stamp's for address's, or signature's. Another possibility is that this phrase may be used to differentiate A-Stamp from several stamps, those stamps, or more stamps than that. The rubber stamp answer is probably closer to being correct. The A rate Postage Stamp Face value refers to the value that is printed on the face of the stamp. If you have a stamp that has no value printed on it, visit the USPS link, which provides a picture of all the non-denominated stamps and their face value. They are still valid for postage. The USPS is in going to issue a 'Forever' stamp, that will be worth the same as a 1st class stamp regardless of the future cost. It isn't expected to be a good investment hedge!

How much is a 1980 stamp book from the sede vatcane is worth today?

It will depend specifically an what you mean by a stamp book. Is it a small collection of stamps issued in 1980? Is it a small collection sold in 1980 with stamps from different years? Is it simply a book about the stamps? The catalog or purchase price of stamps can be found by consulting a catalog, usually available in the reference section of your library. Selling is usually at 25% of that price.
