It kills them, er.. us, I mean. Vehicle exhaust contains Carbon Dioxide (CO2), Carbon Monoxide (CO), Nitrous Oxides (NOx), Water vapour (H2O) as well as particulates (sot). CO2 is fatal in large doses: above around 15%. Smaller amounts cause confusion, headaches, disorientation. CO is dangerous in ANY amount. It is absorbed by red blood cells more easliy than O2 (oxygen). This causes fatigue, headaches, disorientation, and death. It can take days to expell all the CO from a body, even from a small inhalation. NOx causes acid rain. Enough said. People often commit suicide by enclosing themselves in a garage and leaving the engine on. Also: people stuck in cars in snow, for instance, are well-advised to open a window for ventilation while running the engine for warmth to avoid poisoning.
there is always exhaust (expect when the engine's off or hybird) unless you are too close to the car in front of you.
