When sending an e-mail, adding an e-mail address in the CC box would be done when you want another person to also get a copy of the e-mail. BCC would cause other people to get a copy of the e-mail but does not publish the list of who you sent the e-mail to.

Carbon copy, or "cc:" is used when you want to send a copy of an email to someone who is not directly addressed in the email. For example, if I were to invite both Beth and Dave to a meeting, then I would put both Beth's and Dave's email addresses in the "To:" line. However, if I only wanted Dave to come to the meeting, but Beth should know about the invitation, I would put Dave in the "To:" line and Beth in the "cc:" line. Furthermore, if I didn't want Dave to know about me telling Beth about the meeting, I would put Beth in the "bcc:" (blind carbon copy) line.
