Male circumcision is the surgical removal of part of, or all of, the foreskin of the penis. Male circumcision is practiced by many religions and cultures and it is believed that there are medical benefits to having the foreskin removed though medical associations in most developed countries do not recommend male circumcision as a routine procedure. In some countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia, infant circumcisions are performed, upon parental request, when the child is just a few days old.

Female circumcision, also known as female genital mutilation or female genital cutting, is a removal of part or all of the external genetalia. Though some cultures do practice female circumcision for religious and social reasons, it is very much frowned upon by most western countries, mainly because of the lack of consent in many cases along with horrible medical consequences the females may suffer later in their life due to having the procedure performed. Females have been known to die from excessive blood loss from the procedure.
