Fountain pens can have many different looks.

Like old Dip pens and quill pens, they have metal nibs - a flat, pointed piece of metal that directs ink to the paper. Unlike Dip pens, fountain pens are designed to hold a quantity of ink so you don't have to keep an ink supply handy. That makes them a lot more portable. They also have a cap to prevent the nib from drying out between uses.

The ink storage area (barrel) can be made out a variety of things, like gold, silver, brass, Stainless steel, titanium, aluminum, celluloid, resin, carbon fibre, glass, plastic or hard rubber (common in pens in the late 1800s to early 1900s).

Pen barrels and caps are often painted or made in a colored plastic. Some have fancy filigreed metal overlays or sleeves over the barrel.

Nibs can be left sticking out, or partially covered so that only the tip is visible. All nibs used to be made of gold or a gold alloy, since it was more resistant to the corrosive inks sold back in the days of dip pens. Today, most nibs are made of stainless steel which is stronger, cheaper, and more suitable to speedy note-taking.

I suggest you go to Ebay and type "fountain pens" in the search box. You could also go to Pentrace, and go to the message board. Folks are always posting pictures of fountain pens. Sign up for free, and you will also be able to post so you can ask questions yourself.
