You can train the dog to chase the wild dog that might appear on your farm. At 6pm you will be notified by Mars, the Channel 4 Sprite, if a wild dog appears on your farm. The wild dog can bark at the livestock and poultry that you have left unfenced outside, scaring them and making them grumpy the next day. If you have your dog outside it may chase the wild dog around and keep it occupied so it doesn't get the chance to chase your chickens. You can train your dog to chase the wild dog by playing ball with it. Thomas will give you a Dog Ball (for free). If you throw the Dog Ball near your dog, it will retrieve it for you. Keep throwing the Dog Ball around to train your dog. You can see how well your training is going by looking at your dog's statistics from inside the Farm Summary screen. If you lose (or give away) your Dog Ball then Thomas will appear again and give you a new one.
How do you train a stubborn dog to drop a ball?
Retrieving is a hard thing to teach a dog. If you are working on that you definitely want to break it down into steps such as picking up the ball, bringing the ball back (it helps to have a leash for this), and dropping the ball. Most dogs won't drop a ball unless there is a reason for them to do so. Think about it, would you want to give someone your cool new toy in exchange for nothing? Often times if you offer a dog a treat in exchange for the ball he will give up the ball. I would suggest using a good treat such as a bit of cheese, peanut butter, hot dogs bits, or small pieces of chicken. After a bit your dog should start to willing give up his ball. I would keep some treats in your pocket still, regular dog treats would do.

My dog was the same way! If you want them to give you the ball, just turn around. This lets him know (sorry if its a girl) that you won't play unless they give you the ball. Works like a charm!
