My grandmother, who died in 1963, told me that "going sparking" was a term young people used to refer to a boy and a girl going on a serious date... where some serious play might occur. She was raised in Massachusetts so perhaps the term was regional.
In her era and region a boy and a girl were not usually permitted to go on a date without other couples along. "Sparking" probably involved pretty tame stuff compared to today!
