Gran Turismo Omologato (G.T.O) means Grand Tourer Homologation, basically a car that has this approved can be entered into racing events such as le mans or stock car racing. A simple car to look at is the ferrari 250 GTO.
Also note Le Mans was a Tempest as well. The Tempest could be ordered with the Le Mans package or the GTO package.
This was Pontiac's use of racing terms to associate their cars with racing.
