Heaven is nice and bright. It also has gold streets and you will never be sad or mad in heaven since everything is bright and happy. There is no night, it is only day, but you will not get sleepy.

That depends on whom you ask - for example, different religions have different ideas about heaven. According to people interviewed by Dr. Moody (who had seen a glimpse of the afterlife - see the book "Life after Life"), the afterlife is so different to this life that it can not be adequately described.

Jesus said "The Kingdom of Heaven is within you."

This means that the spirit of God, along with love, kindness, compassion and altruism, dwells with innate goodness in an individual.

Those looking for a Heaven with St. Peter at the gate and a place of golden slippers, streets of gold, (the golden slippers and streets of gold come from an old southern spiritual), silver rivers and green valleys might be disappointed.

Or, those who reach Heaven might find that it is what they want it to be.

No one can say what Heaven looks like because no one has come back to tell us. Just envision the most overwhelmingly wonderful place you can, and for you maybe that's exactly what it will be. Additionally, since Jesus said it is within yourself, you already have all the wonders of paradise in your own body and soul.

The word 'Heaven' has different meanings in the Bible. (Even as our English word 'sky' can have different meanings. ie: the night sky - referring to the stars / plane flies in sky - meaning in the atmosphere, but certainly NOT in the night sky.)) So, we have to take this into consideration; and have an understanding of 'context'.

  • 1) Heaven refers to the Physical Universe,. You know what that looks like, especially if you look thru a telescope. You see the planets, the stars; but also includes the various forces which bind the physical Universe together.
  • 2) Heaven also refers to the Atmosphere surrounding the earth. In other words the 'air'. This is where birds fly. Where the clouds exist. Certainly you understand that the birds do not fly in the #1 meaning of heaven; birds don't fly between the planets.
  • 3) Heaven also refers to the 'Invisible Realm'. God dwells in the Heavens. But he is certainly not confined to the Atmosphere. Nor is he confined by the 'Physical Universe'. God dwells in an invisible realm, undetectable to us and our means of detecting.

God does not need 'eyes' to see. God is not limited by the speed of light. God exists in 'another dimension' we know nothing about; because we are just too limited.

We use the word 'heaven' because that's all we can comprehend in some very very small way - - and still we really can't comprehend at all.

So the question, if referring to the 'dwelling place' of Jehovah God; the question cannot be answered. None of us are capable of knowing; just as we can't really comprehend that God always existed. It's too much for our brain; it just blows a gasket; so we simply 'accept' the truth of what the Bible does say.

Heaven is a real place described in the Bible. The word "heaven" is found 276 times in the New Testament alone. Scripture refers to three heavens. The Apostle Paul was "caught up to the third heaven," but he was prohibited from revealing what he experienced there (2 Corinthians 12:1-9).

If a third heaven exists, there must also be two other heavens. The first is most frequently referred to in the Old Testament as the "sky" or the "firmament." This is the heaven that contains clouds, the area that birds fly through. The second heaven is interstellar/outer space, which is the abode of the stars, planets, and other celestial objects (Genesis 1:14-18).

The third heaven, the location of which is not revealed, is the dwelling place of God. Jesus promised to prepare a place for true Christians in heaven (John 14:2). Heaven is also the destination of Old Testament saints who died trusting God's promise of the Redeemer (Ephesians 4:8). Whoever believes in Christ shall never perish but have eternal life (John 3:16).

The apostle John was privileged to see and report on the heavenly city (Revelation 21:10-27). John witnessed that heaven (the new earth) possesses the "glory of God" (Revelation 21:11), the very presence of God. Because heaven has no night and the Lord Himself is the light, the sun and moon are no longer needed (Revelation 22:5).

The city is filled with the brilliance of costly stones and crystal clear jasper. Heaven has twelve gates (Revelation 21:12) and twelve foundations (Revelation 21:14). The paradise of the Garden of Eden is restored: the river of the water of life flows freely and the tree of life is available once again, yielding fruit monthly with leaves that "heal the nations" (Revelation 22:1-2). However eloquent John was in his description of heaven, the reality of heaven is beyond the ability of finite man to describe (1 Corinthians 2:9).

Heaven is a place of "no mores." There will be no more tears, no more pain, and no more sorrow (Revelation 21:4). There will be no more separation, because death will be conquered (Revelation 20:6). The best thing about heaven is the presence of our Lord and Savior (1 John 3:2). We will be face to face with the Lamb of God who loved us and sacrificed Himself so that we can enjoy His presence in heaven for eternity.

The Bible describes heaven as paradise. With streets made of gold, and precious jewels as bricks, it will be beautiful.

ANOTHER ANSWER:

The only passage in the Bible referring to "streets of Gold" is in Revelation 21... which is a description of the "Holy City, NEW Jerusalem"... the very throne of the Father of Christ... that "COMES DOWN FROM HEAVEN ONTO THE NEW EARTH;" the result of Judgment Day, the burning and purifying of the Old Earth of sin by Fire, and the remaking of the heavens and the earth [see the chronological end of chapter 20].

"And death and the grave were thrown into the Lake of Fire. This is the Second Death - the Lake of Fire. And anyone whose name was not found in the Book of Life was thrown into the Lake of Fire." (Rev.20:14-15 NLT New Living Translation)

[see also II Peter 2 for further description of this monumental time at the conclusion of God's plan:

"...Then the heavens will pass away with a terrible noise, and EVERYTHING IN THEM WILL DISAPPEAR IN FIRE, and the earth and everything on it will be exposed to Judgment. Since EVERYTHING AROUND US IS GOING TO MELT AWAY, what Holy, Godly lives should you be living? You should look forward to that day and hurry it along - the Day when God will SET THE HEAVENS ON FIRE AND THE ELEMENTS WILL MELT AWAY IN THE FLAMES. But we are looking forward to THE NEW HEAVENS AND NEW EARTH He has promised, a WORLD where everyone is Right with God." (II Peter 2:10-13 NLT)

Revelation 21, besides describing the "streets" of the Holy City descending from heaven after this astounding transformation, tells us:

"...the CITY WAS PURE GOLD, as clear as glass." (verse 18)

The "streets" [or MAIN street] are described in verse 21: "... And the main street was pure gold, as clear as glass."

What will the earth look like after it's "melted down"... when all the water on it evaporates, and all of its elements undergo extreme heat? What will happen to all the sand on the ocean bottoms, and all the seashores, and all the desert places in the world? Doesn't sand turn to GLASS when heated sufficiently? Aren't all the precious elements cleansed of all their impurities?

Won't the New Earth be a Shining Gem in the midst of the universe... a SEA OF GLASS reflecting all the colors of the rainbow... including the immense amount of GOLD that scientists tell us make up much of the oceans in the world?

From the Bible's description of the New Heavens and the New Earth [not heaven]... how can we not be picturing a GLASS EARTH!?! With not just the "streets" of the Holy City, New Jerusalem... where the throne of God the Father will one day descend and reside... but everywhere you go on that New Earth will be streets of "gold-reflecting glass"... and colorful gems everywhere.

Of course no one knows what heaven looks like, because there is no evidence that heaven even exists. All we have is a vague list of pious promises meant to make the faithful more faithful in the hope of getting the nebulous rewards that religion so confidently promises. When the notion that there is a heaven was being developed, it was assumed to be a quite physical place in the sky just above us. It could be portrayed with God surrounded by endless angels singing, or having streets paved with gold.

Science has shown that heaven is not in the sky just above us, or in any other physical location in the universe. Religion has therefore adapted by saying that heaven is not so much a physical place, but a state of grace. If this belief is true, heaven only exists spiritually and does not look like anything material. It would mean that Stephen could not have looked up into heaven and seen Jesus on the right hand of God (Acts 7:55). It would mean that the visions we can read about in the Book of Revelation are at best allegorical and do not describe heaven.
